1.Turn off the power at the circuit breaker.
2.Confirm the power is off by flipping the switch and using a voltage tester.
3.Remove the switch plate cover with a flathead screwdriver.
4.Unscrew and remove the existing switch using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
5.Gently pull the switch away from the wall box.
6.Use a voltage tester to ensure no wires are live.
7.Loosen the screws holding the wires to the old switch and disconnect them.
8.Identify the ground wire, typically green or bare copper.
9.Use needle-nose pliers to create a loop in the end of the ground wire.
10.Attach the ground wire to the green screw on the new dimmer switch.
11.Strip about 3/4 inch of insulation from the end of the other wires.
12.Connect the black wire from the wall to the black wire on the dimmer switch using a wire connector.
13.Connect the white wire from the wall to the white wire on the dimmer switch using a wire connector.
14.If there's a red wire, connect it to the red wire on the dimmer switch using a wire connector.
15.Ensure all connections are secure and no bare wire is exposed.
16.Gently fold the wires back into the wall box.
17.Mount the dimmer switch to the wall box and secure it with screws.
18.Attach the switch plate cover over the dimmer switch.
19.Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker.
20.Test the dimmer switch to ensure it operates correctly.
