Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1.Tighten all loose screws on the door handle and the strike plate on the door frame to ensure everything is secure.
  2. 2.Rub a pencil or crayon on the tip of the latch bolt to mark where it contacts the strike plate.
  3. 3.Close the door and operate the handle several times to transfer the mark onto the strike plate or door frame.
  4. 4.Inspect the strike plate for rub marks to identify exactly where the latch is misaligned.
  5. 5.Use a flathead screwdriver to gently bend the small metal tab on the strike plate if the latch is just barely missing the opening.
  6. 6.Loosen the strike plate screws slightly if the plate needs to be shifted to align with the latch.
  7. 7.Shift the strike plate to the correct position and re-tighten the screws securely.
  8. 8.Use a metal file or wood chisel to remove a small amount of material from the strike plate or door frame if the latch still does not slide into place smoothly.
  9. 9.Insert wooden toothpicks coated in wood glue into any stripped screw holes to provide a tight fit for the screws when re-installing the plate.
  10. 10.Test the door closure repeatedly to ensure the latch engages cleanly and the door closes without resistance.
