Where to find it

The car stereo is located in the center of the dashboard. Access usually requires removing plastic trim panels surrounding the unit; check your owner's manual or a vehicle-specific repair guide for the exact removal sequence.

What it looks like

A rectangular or double-DIN unit integrated into the center console, often featuring a display screen, volume knobs, and buttons.

Parts (4)

Get the exact part. Parts change by year, make, model and engine. Give the parts store all four, or your VIN (it's on your registration, on the sticker inside the driver's door, and on the dashboard where it meets the windshield on the driver's side), and they'll match the right part for your vehicle.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1.
Set the parking brake and disconnect the negative terminal of the car battery to prevent electrical shorts. Why: disconnecting the battery prevents accidental short circuits while you work with live wires.
  2. 2.
Give the parts store your year, make, and model so they match the exact stereo, wiring harness, and dash kit for your vehicle.
  3. 3.
Stand inside the vehicle facing the dashboard and use plastic panel removal tools to gently pry off the trim pieces surrounding the factory radio. Work slowly to avoid cracking the plastic trim.
  4. 4.
Locate and remove the mounting screws securing the factory radio to the dashboard, then carefully pull the unit out just enough to access the rear connections.
  5. 5.
Unplug the wiring harness connectors and the antenna cable from the back of the factory radio. Take a photo of the connections for reference before fully removing the old unit.
  6. 6.
Connect the wires from your new stereo's harness to the vehicle-specific wiring harness adapter using crimp connectors or solder, matching them by color or following the provided wiring diagram.
  7. 7.
Plug the new wiring harness adapter into the vehicle's factory connector and attach the antenna cable to the new stereo.
  8. 8.
Slide the new stereo into the dashboard mounting kit and secure it according to the kit's instructions, then slide the entire assembly into the dashboard opening.
  9. 9.
Reconnect the negative battery terminal and test the stereo to ensure all functions work correctly before fully securing the unit and reattaching the dashboard trim pieces.
  10. 10.
If the stereo does not power on or sound is missing, double-check all wire connections and the fuse box; if issues persist, have a professional car audio shop inspect the wiring.
