Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1.
Ensure the engine is off, the key is out of the ignition, and the engine is cool to the touch.
  2. 2.
Open the hood and secure it with the prop rod or latch.
  3. 3.
Locate the air filter housing, which is usually a black plastic box connected to a large air intake hose near the front or side of the engine bay.
  4. 4.
Give the parts store your year, make, and model so they match the exact part.
  5. 5.
Undo the clips, screws, or bolts securing the housing cover; if the cover is stuck, check for hidden fasteners or intake hoses that may need to be moved aside.
  6. 6.
Lift the cover carefully, remove the old air filter, and wipe out any loose debris from the housing with a clean cloth.
  7. 7.
Insert the new air filter, ensuring it is seated squarely and the rubber seal is flat; most filters only fit one way, so do not force it.
  8. 8.
Replace the housing cover and secure it with the original clips, screws, or bolts, ensuring it sits flush with no gaps.
  9. 9.
Reattach any intake hoses or sensors you moved during the process.
