Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1.
Locate the shut-off valves under the sink and turn them clockwise until they stop to shut off the water supply. Why: This prevents water from spraying out when you disassemble the faucet.
  2. 2.
Open the faucet handles to drain any remaining water from the lines.
  3. 3.
Plug the sink drain with a rag or stopper to prevent small screws or parts from falling down the pipe.
  4. 4.
Remove the decorative cap on the handle if present, then use a screwdriver or Allen wrench to loosen the set screw and lift the handle off.
  5. 5.
Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the packing nut or retaining ring, then pull the cartridge or stem assembly straight out.
  6. 6.
Take the old parts to the hardware store to ensure you purchase an exact match for your specific faucet model.
  7. 7.
Clean any mineral buildup from the faucet body with a cloth and install the new parts in the reverse order of disassembly.
  8. 8.
Remove the aerator from the end of the spout, then turn the water supply back on slowly to flush the lines for one minute before replacing the aerator.
  9. 9.
Check for leaks and ensure the faucet operates smoothly.
