Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1.
Locate the water shut-off valve on the wall or floor behind the toilet and turn it clockwise until it stops to shut off the water supply. - 2.
Remove the toilet tank lid by lifting it straight up and setting it aside in a safe place. - 3.
Flush the toilet and hold the handle down to drain as much water as possible from the tank. - 4.
Use a towel or sponge to soak up any remaining water at the bottom of the tank. - 5.
Disconnect the old flapper chain from the flush handle lever and remove the flapper from the pegs on the overflow tube. - 6.
Take the old flapper to the hardware store to ensure you purchase the correct replacement size and type. - 7.
Install the new flapper by attaching it to the overflow tube pegs and connecting the chain to the flush handle lever. - 8.
Adjust the chain length so there is a small amount of slack when the flapper is closed. - 9.
Turn the water supply valve counter-clockwise to refill the tank and check for leaks. - 10.
Replace the tank lid once you have confirmed the toilet flushes correctly and the flapper seals properly.
