Take care
The main risk is electrical shock or shorting the battery; always disconnect the negative battery terminal first. Be cautious when working with the cooling system as the fluid can be hot and toxic.

Where to find it
At the front of the engine bay, behind the radiator fan shroud, driven by the serpentine belt. The exact spot depends on the engine; check a service manual for yours.
What it looks like
A round metal unit about the size of a coffee can, with cooling vents and a grooved pulley the belt runs around, and a thick wire bolted to the back.

Get the exact part. Parts change by year, make, model and engine. Give the parts store all four, or your VIN (it's on your registration, on the sticker inside the driver's door, and on the dashboard where it meets the windshield on the driver's side), and they'll match the right part for your vehicle.

Step-by-Step Instructions
1.
Give the parts store your year, make, model and engine, or your VIN, so they match the exact alternator.
2.
Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Why: the alternator's main wire is live from the battery, and a wrench touching it can spark.
3.
Let the engine cool completely, then drain some coolant and remove the upper radiator hose and fan shroud to reach the alternator.
4.
Take a photo of the serpentine belt routing (or find the diagram sticker under the hood), then use a serpentine belt tool or a wrench on the tensioner to release tension and slide the belt off the alternator pulley.
5.
Unplug the connector and remove the nut holding the thick wire on the back of the alternator.
6.
Remove the bolts holding the alternator to its bracket and lift it out.
7.
Install the new alternator in reverse order, reconnecting its wires.
8.
Reinstall the belt following your photo or the diagram, then the fan shroud and radiator hose, and refill the coolant. Why: a belt on the wrong path can slip or come off.
9.
Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and check that the battery warning light goes off.
