Guide 2: Replacing a Leaky Kitchen Faucet (Home & DIY)
Project Difficulty: Intermediate
Estimated Time: 1-2 hours
Feasibility Score: 7/10 (Requires basic plumbing knowledge)

Project Overview

A dripping faucet wastes approximately 3,000 gallons of water per year and costs money on your water bill. Replacing a faucet is a manageable DIY project that saves you $150-300 in plumber fees. Most modern faucets are designed for easy installation and come with clear instructions.

Tools Required (Exact Specifications)
| Tool | Specification | Why You Need It | Approx. Cost |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| Adjustable Wrench | 10" chrome-plated steel | Loosening and tightening faucet connections | $12-25 |
| Basin Wrench | 10" long, swivel head | Reaching tight spaces under the sink to remove the old faucet | $15-30 |
| Screwdrivers | Phillips and flathead set | Removing handle screws and set screws | $10-20 |
| Plumber's Putty | Standard, non-hardening | Sealing the faucet base to prevent leaks | $5-10 |
| Bucket or Towels | Standard | Catching residual water when disconnecting lines | $0-5 |

Materials Required (Exact Specifications)
| Material | Quantity | Specification | Why You Need It | Approx. Cost |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| New Kitchen Faucet | 1 unit | Single-hole or 3-hole (match your sink configuration), with supply lines included | Replaces the old, leaky faucet | $80-300 |
| Flexible Supply Lines | 2 lines | 3/8" compression fittings, stainless steel braided, 12-24" length | Connects the faucet to the water supply | $10-20 |
| Teflon Tape | 1 roll | 1/2" wide, 260" length | Seals threaded connections to prevent leaks | $3-8 |

Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Turn Off the Water Supply

Locate the shut-off valves under your sink (usually two small knobs, one for hot and one for cold water). Turn both clockwise until they stop. If you cannot find shut-off valves, you may need to turn off the main water supply to your home. Turn on the faucet to release any remaining pressure in the lines.

Step 2: Disconnect the Old Faucet

Place a bucket under the sink to catch water. Using your basin wrench, reach up behind the sink and loosen the nuts connecting the supply lines to the faucet. Once loose, you can hand-tighten to remove them completely. Next, locate the mounting nuts (usually under the sink, holding the faucet in place). Use your adjustable wrench to loosen and remove these nuts. The old faucet should now lift out.

Step 3: Clean the Sink Surface

Remove any old plumber's putty or sealant from the sink surface using a plastic scraper. Wipe the area clean with a damp cloth and let it dry completely.

Step 4: Install the New Faucet

Apply a thin bead of plumber's putty around the base of the new faucet. Position the faucet in the hole(s) and press down firmly. From underneath, hand-tighten the mounting nuts, then use your wrench to snug them down (do not over-tighten, as this can crack the sink).

Step 5: Connect the Supply Lines

Wrap 3-4 layers of Teflon tape around the threaded connections on the faucet. This prevents leaks at the connection points. Connect the hot and cold supply lines to the appropriate ports on the faucet, hand-tightening first, then using your wrench to snug them down.

Step 6: Test for Leaks

Turn the shut-off valves back on (counterclockwise). Turn on the faucet and check for leaks at all connection points. If you see any drips, tighten the connection slightly more. Run the faucet for 2-3 minutes to ensure everything is working correctly.

Feasibility Assessment
This project is feasible for most homeowners with basic mechanical aptitude. The most common mistakes are (1) over-tightening connections, which can crack the faucet or sink, and (2) forgetting to wrap Teflon tape on threaded connections. By following these steps carefully, you'll have a fully functional, leak-free faucet.

Shopping Shortcuts
Search for "kitchen faucet with supply lines included" to find options that come with everything you need. Most major retailers offer same-day or next-day delivery.
